Get a taste of “Spooky Sandy Hook” by lantern light! Rich in factual history that stretches back to the American Revolution, Sandy Hook is also ripe with legends of ghostly apparitions and other mysterious phenomena. The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society will cast a spotlight on Sandy Hook’s eerie side during an exclusive, 90-minute guided walk with a National Park ranger at 6:00 PM on Saturday, Oct. 12 (rain or shine). Our group will visit the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the nation’s oldest, built in 1764. Tales associated with this seaside sentinel include a secret chamber, where a skeleton was found seated before a fireplace; phantom pirates who search the beaches for Capt. Kidd’s buried treasure; and a Revolutionary War soldier who lurks in the lighthouse after being captured and hanged by occupying British troops. We’ll also visit old gun batteries at Fort Hancock. While the focus will be on their practical uses during two world wars, these shadowy ruins conjure a creepy atmosphere well-suited to a ghost-themed walk at dusk.
