Oysters aren’t just for eating, they’re also phenomenal filters! One oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.
The American Littoral Society’s Operation Oyster program aims to improve water quality in New Jersey’s bays and estuaries, as well as improve coastal resiliency through re-establishing natural oyster reefs. Oysters help keep water clean and oyster reefs help protect the coastline. They are nature’s water filters, each one is able to clean up to 50 gallons of water a day. Oyster reefs also serve as speed bumps for waves during storms. Over-harvesting and decades of pollution, accelerated by rampant development, have decimated New Jersey’s natural oyster population.
The American Littoral Society is hosting Oh, Oysters! to raise funds for coastal conservation and bring awareness to the plight of the once prolific Eastern Oyster. Tickets include beer and wine, passed hors d’oeuvres, and a raw bar prior to the screening, the 90-minute film, and a panel discussion with the featured farmers, Society staff, and other experts after the film.
