The freeing of Jews from medieval ghettos as a result of the Napoleonic Age brought an
explosion of Jewish talent that significantly advanced world progress. Ms. Addelston will discuss several of the most important ones in politics, art, music, literature, and science, including Sarah Bernhardt, Albert Einstein, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, Harry Houdini, and Felix
Mendelssohn.
Susan Addelston, a graduate of Hunter (CUNY), was a New York City high school social
studies teacher in Brooklyn and Manhattan for decades. She also taught in specialized high schools, worked for the New York Times as a curriculum developer, facilitated workshops for teachers, and was a docent at several museums. Ms. Addelston enjoys travel and theatre,
non-fiction reading, and is passionate about animal welfare.
Funding has been made possible in part by a general operating support grant from the New
Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State, through grant funds
administered by the Monmouth County Historical Commission.
