How Black History has Shaped New Jersey
February 24, 2022 @ 7:00 pm
Free
=We are proud to announce acclaimed historian, professor and author, Graham Russell Gao Hodges. Professor Hodges’ research on slavery in the Northeast has been integral to MCHA’s acclaimed exhibit, Beneath the Floorboards: Whispers of the Enslaved at Marlpit Hall. His newest book, The Marion Thompson Wright Reader, provides an accessible introduction to a modern edition of Marion Thompson Wright’s classic book, The Education of Negroes in New Jersey and to her full body of scholarly work. In this lecture, Hodges will draw on his research and writings on Black New Jersey history to evoke key events and personalities that have shaped the colony and state’s past. Much of the material will focus on Monmouth County.
