Wikoff Hill Burial Ground is a small cemetery in Freehold dating from the Revolutionary War. This cemetery was lost for decades before being found by a man walking his dog one day.
In 1702 John Wikoff (Wykoff) purchased 1000 acres of land near Freehold, and this cemetery was part of that tract. The location was lost for quite some time, but in 2008 the Historic Preservation Commission paid to have the land cleaned up and a fence installed. The cemetery has been largely restored and holds much history. The site is seldom open to the public, so take advantage of this rare opportunity to tour the site and learn about the residents buried there.
This cemetery is embedded in a residential neighborhood, so it is limited to 15 visitors at a time. Four time slots are offered, and registration is required. Walk-ups will be accepted the same day if there are any slots left at that time.
